We are Brian and Monica Berry, church-planting missionaries serving in Puerto Rico, sent out by Canton Baptist Temple. After serving the Lord in Ireland, God transitioned us to this new mission field in July 2026. We are excited to see how He will work as we share the Gospel and seek to establish churches throughout the island.
Puerto Rico is wide open to the Gospel, but it has often been overlooked as a church-planting mission field. As a U.S. territory, there are no visa or passport requirements for Americans who desire to serve here long term. Many cults and false religions have taken advantage of that opportunity, yet few Baptists are coming to Puerto Rico to plant churches. The island is filled with charismatic and “prosperity gospel” churches, but there is a great need for strong, Bible-preaching Baptist churches. We have already identified four large areas without a Gospel-preaching church, and we are praying for God’s direction concerning where He would have us plant our first church. We are coordinating evangelistic outreaches in those areas with the desire that God would lead us to the specific place to move and put down roots.
Along with our church-planting efforts, we will be involved in reaching people through sports evangelism, youth camps, and other outreach ministries and Christian training across the island. Puerto Rico is home to more than three million people on an island that stretches only about 100 miles from east to west and 35 miles from north to south. Many people feel that their only hope for a better life is to leave Puerto Rico and build a life somewhere else. Yet while they dream of gaining the world, they are in danger of losing their souls without Christ. That is why God has burdened us to reach the people of Puerto Rico with the Gospel and point them to the lasting hope that can only be found in Jesus.
