PSALMS 19:7-9

Explanation
The Psalmist doesn’t just say something about the quality of the Scripture. It says something about its’ effect. What does the scripture do when it is read, heard, learned, applied and obeyed?

Well let’s ask the question of the psalmist and see his answer…

Psalms 19:7-13

7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul:

The law of the Lord is perfect. How perfect is it? “converting the soul”. It’s so straight, it has a straitening effect on the person.

the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

How sure is the testimony of the Lord? It makes simple people wise. People that don’t have a lot of sense, get sense from the Lord and become wise. You can become wise by learning from your mistakes, or you can become wise learning from the Lord.

8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart:

How right are they? They rejoice the heart. When you learn to love the Word of God, you apply it to your life, and the end of that is blessing. There is all kind of joy that comes from obedience to God’s Word!

the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

How pure are God’s commands? They help you see the way He sees! God’s commands are directional. There are some paths you just don’t go down because God says not to go down them, and that brings all kinds of discernment, direction, and ultimately joy! Some of you are so stressed out because of sin. Sin makes us stupid. Sin makes us stressed. Sin brings all kinds of problems.

9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever:

There is never a situation, nor will there ever be a situation, in which fearing the Lord will be a bad frame of mind. A million years from now, we will need to fear God. Understanding who God is and who we are will always lead to a proper and pure fear of God. When we think like he thinks, then its effect will be that we will do what he says.

the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Do you want to do what is true and righteous? Learn the judgements of the Lord by reading and obeying the judments of the Lord. We need them every day.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Ok… you have a choice. On this side you have a pile of gold. On this side you have the effect of living according to the word of God. Which one should you choose?

It’s not even close.

Gold goes away. Money goes away. We are eternal. Our relationship with God will last forever.

Paul said in the New Testament that the scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation. This is like what the psalmist says in verse 11.

11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

We are warned about danger. We are warned about the effects of sin. We are warned about the danger of unbelief.

12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. 13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

The scripture says, and what my mom has told me repeatedly. “Be sure your sin will find you out.” What is kept in the dark grows. What is hidden grows and ultimately will not be able to be hidden any more. Hidden sins destroy. They eat away like a cancer, and eventually they destroy the host. Light is a great disinfectant. Repentance and restitution are necessary. If they are not addressed, then they will have dominion over you.

Application
What we need to do is to have a place, a time, and a plan to let the Scripture of God and the Spirit of God have the effect of the Word of God… The Word that…

  • Converts us
  • Makes us wise
  • Rejoices our hearts
  • Enlightens our eyes
  • Warns us
  • Brings rewards with obedience
  • Exposes our sin
  • Brings us freedom from sins dominion in our lives

This is its effect.

Response
Help me to read your word not just to check it off a list, but to cooperate with you to let you have this kind of effect on my life. I love you Lord! Amen
