Youth leaders are some of my heroes! Let’s be honest – being a youth leader is no easy task. These dedicated individuals not only choose to work with teens (which many adults shy away from), but they also commit to multiple weekly activities: Sunday School, youth group, monthly events, visitation, and more. The very best youth leaders go beyond being mere chaperones to become true disciple-makers for the next generation.

Truly, youth leaders are a gracious gift from our gracious God! Because they serve humbly, not seeking fame or glory, many youth leaders expect nothing in return. However, as youth pastors, we should, at minimum, take time throughout the year to step outside our normal routine and specifically thank our youth leaders for their wonderful, humble, servant-hearted work with our teens.

Here are 5 meaningful ways to show appreciation to your youth leaders:

1. Birthday Celebrations

Create a master list of all your leaders’ birthdays (I strongly encourage you to do this for your students as well). At the start of each month, add these birthdays to your calendar with reminders. During the service before their birthday, publicly recognize the leader in youth group, sing happy birthday (embrace the awkwardness!), and bless them with a gift card to their favorite restaurant.

2. Special Treats

No one has ever complained about receiving food (except when I’ve baked it – but that’s another story). This simple gesture shows thoughtfulness and care. Bring a box of donuts on Sunday morning, set up a fancy coffee station, or buy their favorite drinks and snacks. Get creative with presentation – attach tags like “I DONUT know what I’d do without you” or “Thank you for your servant’s HEART” on Valentine’s Day chocolate (puns absolutely intended).

3. Christmas Recognition

The holiday season offers perfect opportunities to thank your leaders collectively. Consider purchasing personalized mugs filled with hot chocolate and marshmallows, or host a Christmas party at your home exclusively for your leaders. These gatherings foster unity and camaraderie among your youth ministry team.

4. Gratitude Wall

This might be my favorite idea we’ve implemented. Throughout November, ask teens to write thank-you notes on sticky notes during Sunday School and Youth Group, then place them on a designated wall. Guide students to choose different leaders each time to ensure everyone receives appreciation. At month’s end, collect the notes, organize them by leader, and frame them alongside a photo of that leader. This meaningful gift reminds our leaders of their impact on students’ lives.

5. Public Recognition

While tangible gifts are wonderful, sometimes publicly honoring your leaders in front of students, parents, or the entire congregation can be incredibly meaningful. Camp services and parent meetings provide excellent opportunities for this recognition. It helps leaders feel appreciated while reminding everyone of their volunteers’ dedication.

Budgeting for Appreciation

Some of these ideas cost more than others, so budget wisely. Set aside funds specifically for youth leader appreciation, whether for meals, gifts, or covering event fees.

Why Leader Appreciation Matters

Neglecting our youth leaders can lead to two significant problems. First, they may not develop as disciple-makers because they aren’t being discipled themselves. Second, they risk burnout – which isn’t inevitable and can be prevented. One of the strongest antidotes to ministry burnout is appreciation and knowing you’re making a difference. Like all members of Christ’s body, our youth leaders need reminders of both their ministry’s importance and their tremendous impact on the next generation. As youth pastors, we’re responsible for training, encouraging, and appreciating our leaders, enabling them to do the same for others.

The Apostle Paul consistently recognized and thanked various churches and leaders for their faithful service to God’s glory. He expressed this clearly to the Philippian church:

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.” – Philippians 1:3-5

May we follow Paul’s example as we intentionally, prayerfully, and joyfully thank God for the gift of youth leaders!
